It has been reported that the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Board has approved a new iteration of the ASWEAS for accrediting social work programs. Although we are unsure of the full contents of the new Australian Social Work Education Accreditation Standard (ASWEAS) we do know that they remove the current requirements for:
- Level E / Professor to head the program;
- Minimum staff requirements. i.e ‘staffing inputs’; and
- Staff to student ratios
While the AASW CEO, Cindy Smith claims that these changes will be “remarkable and impactful and nothing short of transformative”, they are unlikely to do this in a positive way for the quality of social work education and the standing of the profession.
